Upper Endoscopy

The insertion through the mouth of a thin flexible tube with a tiny video camera and light on its tip to examine the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, performed while sedated. It can be helpful for the evaluation of symptoms of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, and the diagnosis of such disorders as gastro-oesophageal reflux, coeliac disease, stomach ulcers, Barrett’s oesophagus or stomach cancer. Biopsies may be obtained during the procedure to aid in the arrival of an exact diagnosis.
